San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral announces novel way to respond to border detentions

by

Grace Cathedral in San Francisco has launched a petition (you can see it here) responding to the ongoing turmoil at the US southern border. The letter takes the form of a mandatory report of child abuse; though its intended recipients are President Trump and California’s senator, Dianne Feinstein. The cathedral’s website encourages other clergy to sign on.

As of the time of posting (Thursday 6/27 at 2pm) the petiton has over 120 signatories. Signers include Bishop Andrus of California, Episcopal clergy from around the US (and at least one Canadian) as well as two rabbis.

This is the text of the letter

Dear _,

The horrific spectacle of children being separated from their parents, detained, and held in deplorable conditions is shaming our nation in the eyes of the world and in the eyes of God. This has to stop.

We the undersigned are clergy and lay leaders from across religious faiths who are mandated reporters of child abuse, and thus legally required to report such behavior to the relevant authorities. We would therefore be remiss in our civil as well as our religious duty if we did not draw your attention to this unlawful neglect and abuse of minors in the detention centers on our southern border.

Our humanity is outraged at this treatment carried out by our own country. Let us know what steps you will be taking as a public servant to rectify this immoral state of affairs.

According to the Grace website, they are collecting signatures until June 30.

To protect a country, the borders of the country have to protected. It may sound humanistic gesture to let the immigrant walk into our country, but there is a limit. If we open the border, whole Latin America will be entering this country. I do not like Trump, but I feel he is doing right by restricting the illegal entry of people crossing the borders. President Obama also was strict in that matter. There is a legal procedure to enter the country, let all people follow that procedure. I can sympathize with the people who want to enter this country illegally, but the laws have to be observed and followed.

I have been a Christian Educator for 20+ years. Reporting child abuse is always so heart wrenching. I never in a million years thought the richest nation on earth would abuse and traumatize children, parents, individuals. Stoobit TODAY-not tomorrow or the end of the summer or when a legislative bill passes. Every day the abuse continues adds YEARS if trauma. Immediate action is essential to minimizing the abuse these children are experiencing.

I am a Psychologist, and this is doing tremendous harm to the mental well being of these children and their families. The President is responsible for this, and must take immediate action to return these children to their caregivers. America is better than this!

I am a School Nurse and am a mandatory reporter. I would like to report the inhumane and abusive manner that numerous immigrant children are being held in detention camps along the border of the United States of America by President Donald J Trump who is currently living in the White House and many of the people who work for him. Please, someone, do an investigation on this matter and save these children and their families from these horrors and certain trauma that will affect them for the rest of their lives.

It is my job as a teacher to report any suspicions of abuse. How these children are being treated is unacceptable, inhumane, I am ashamed to say I live in a country that does this to children and their families.

As a retired nurse it is my duty to report the abuse of the immigrant children at the border. The President and the entire White House need to be held accountable! This needs to stop NOW! If the United States can not take care of them, then the humanitarian thing to do is take them back to Mexico. We are scaring these innocent children for life. Shame on you Donald Trump, the Senate and Congress!

I am appalled that anyone can treat children with such disrespect of life itself. The ancient laws in the Bible even treat birds and animals with more respect than these children are being treated. I stand with my fellow ministers to oppose this ungodly treatment of life.

This issue is deplorable. I would like to say that is is unacceptable, and I am very sad about the state of affairs of this beautiful country that we call home. This crisis of inhumanity has to stop, but it will not until we all stand together and voice our unbelief. What are our elected officials doing to resolve this?

These children have done nothing wrong, yet they are the detained. Children belong with people who love them.

Thank you to whoever wrote this petition, a wonderful way to heighten awareness for all the voiceless children in these horrid places.

Please everyone pass this on.
