The Independent reports that Lambeth Palace is not happy with the Archbishop of York and his column in The Sun.
I hear from someone in a position to know that Lambeth Palace is not pleased with the unusual “Sunday Service” delivered by the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, in a column in The Sun on Sunday.
…
…What has not gone down well, apparently, is the peculiar mix of faith and product placement. “Ours is a God of second opportunities,” the Archbishop wrote. “With that in mind, live in hope, free from fear, and embrace every day God puts before you in confidence. And if you can buy The Sun seven days a week, even better!

for an excellent summary of the landscape of UK newspapers.
On the one hand, Sentamu’s column in the Sun is extreme outreach. Then again, it can blow up in your face.
Ah, the Sun.
Old joke: Man walks into a newsagent, picks up a copy of the Sun. Says to the shopkeeper, “I’ll take this. Oh, I better get something to read, too.”
Also reminds me of the scene in “So I Married and Axe Murderer” and the discussion about the Weekly World News, which is only a notch below the Sun on actual news coverage…
“Hey Mom, I find it interesting that you refer to the Weekly World News as, “The paper.” The paper contains facts.”
Given some of Sentamu’s other remarks, I’d be happy if he would confine himself to comments such as this.
