The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a surprisingly deep history of feminist thought, which Dr. Joanna Brooks talks about in an interview with The Huffington Post’s Spirituality and Religion editor. Dr. Brooks and her co-editors have an upcoming anthology, Mormon Feminism Essential Writings, exploring the history of feminism in the Mormon Church.
Sadly, there is no transcript available, but Dr. Brooks has recently written an article for HuffPo covering much of the same territory.

I believe that many folks with a similar mindset as this author were also looking for selections to fill the 3 vacancies of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles to also reach beyond the white American males who make up the top tier echelons of the LDS Church’s governance. They were sorely disappointed, for not only are the three white guys from the US, they are all Utah natives. And so the photos of the General Authorities sitting in quorums in the chancel of the LDS Conference Center during the semi-annual General Conference this past weekend are still a sea of pasty white male faces governing a church which is now at least 50% non-US and most of that is Global South.

I see that someone at HuffPost agrees;

that is depressing, and unsurprising, from reading Dr. Brooks on how LDS is covering up/burying any gender equality gains they had in the past! One would hope that gains in equality would continue and progress; it is sad that it is not the case.
