But will she wear her mitre?

But will she wear her mitre?

The Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori will attend the enthronement of the new Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby. From Episcopal News Service:

At the invitation of Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop and Primate Katharine Jefferts Schori will attend the enthronement celebration on March 21 at Canterbury Cathedral.

“I look forward to joining with other primates of the Anglican Communion for the investiture of the next Archbishop of Canterbury,” Presiding Bishop Jefferts Schori said. “It is a particular delight to welcome Justin Welby in this role, as we have come to know him over the last several years, both in The Episcopal Church and among the primates. He enters this role at a time of opportunity and challenge, when many people hope for continued growth and maturation within the Communion.”

Seems the last English bishop never to wear a mitre was the recently-retired and unlamented Wallace Benn.

Our own Miss Marple, GrandmèreMimi, has sleuthed the answer — only the enthronee will have a mitre.

A link to pics of Rowan’s enthronement. Also answers another question — yes, Frank Griswold was there.

Ann, I promise I did not steal your title. Great minds…

It appears the matter of the mitre is settled. According to pictures of Rowan Williams’ enthronement, the Primates wear the rochet and chimiere at the ceremony.

Justin does wear a mitre from time to time. And has fun with it. As does his daughter. Pics:

I conclude that if Justin has no problems with his daughter wearing a mitre he won’t have a problem with Katharine wearing hers.

Welby is an evangelical. Probably no one will wear them! 🙂
