Human suffering is ubiquitous. What makes Jesus’ death on the cross is not what humans did to Jesus, but that God responded with love to hate and with life to death.
Jesus wound up with his body nailed to a tree—
a torment he practically begged for,
or at least did nothing to stop. Pilate
watched the crowd go thumbs down …

Given our limited insight, resources, and emotional nourishment, most of us are doing just about as well as we can. And we can fail so miserably.
Why single out the agony? What’s
a mere six hours?
Torture then, torture now,
the same, the pain’s the same…
There are definitely similarities between the way we are educating our son and the faith community I am partnering with. Neither one comes out of anger at “traditional” systems.
