Brian McLaren presides at same sex commitment ceremony
Well known Christian speaker, Brian McLaren presided at his son's wedding this weekend as reported in Christianity Today:
Brian McLaren, author of A New Kind of Christian and a prominent Christian speaker, led a non-traditional marriage commitment ceremony this weekend, according to The New York Times.Held at the Audubon Naturalist Society in Chevy Chase, Maryland, this ceremony included "traditional Christian elements," but no bride. And the groom—one of them—was McLaren's son, Trevor McLaren. The Times reports that Trevor McLaren wed Owen Ryan Saturday in Washington, D.C., followed by the afternoon commitment ceremony.
In 2006 McLaren thought the church should have a 5 year moratorium on discussions of marriage equality. From Out of Ur:
Perhaps we need a five-year moratorium on making pronouncements. In the meantime, we'll practice prayerful Christian dialogue, listening respectfully, disagreeing agreeably. When decisions need to be made, they'll be admittedly provisional. We'll keep our ears attuned to scholars in biblical studies, theology, ethics, psychology, genetics, sociology, and related fields. Then in five years, if we have clarity, we'll speak; if not, we'll set another five years for ongoing reflection. After all, many important issues in church history took centuries to figure out. Maybe this moratorium would help us resist the "winds of doctrine" blowing furiously from the left and right, so we can patiently wait for the wind of the Spirit to set our course.

Well, it's been over 5 years, so I guess he's making his pronouncement, at least on a personal level. And experiencing firsthand as a father the humanity of our LGBT brothers and sisters (and sons), and their desire to be able to live as full a life as us straight folk, can certainly redirect thoughts which beforehand had only addressed the "other, out there."
There will still be winds blowing from different directions for a while, I'm sure, but we seem to be seeing more of the wind of acceptance.

You know who else listened? Oscar Romero. Conservative archbishop of San Salvador. Listened to the poor. Became a martyr.
