Controversial billboard leads to Archdeacon's dismissal?
Last Christmas, Archdeacon Glyn Cardy put up a rather controversial sign outside of St. Matthew's Anglican church in Auckland New Zealand. The sign was meant to invite people to question their traditional understanding of the birth of Jesus from a virgin mother.
Needless to say the sign was less than enthusiastically received in the community. It was defaced and repaired repeatedly and then finally removed all together.
An article in the Otago Daily Times reports that Archdeacon Cardy is no longer the Archdeacon of Auckland. The bishop of the diocese says that he did not "sack" the Archdeacon even though the bishop called on Cardy to apologize to the parish for his actions and told a correspondent that Cardy would no longer be the Archdeacon.
Apparently, according to the Bishop, the appointment was coming up for review in April and [by implication] the deadline was simply moved forward.
