Presiding Bishop and General Convention
The Presiding Bishop talks to the Bishops and Deputies about the Church Center Budget and Canons as a prelude to General Convention 2012. Looking forward to President of the House of Deputies Bonnie Anderson's view of our tasks ahead from the Deputies' perspective.

I have been critical of Bishop Katharine on a few issues, but this one where I think she is right on. We have to modernize our governance. We are spending far to much money on General Convention.

If our aim is to save money and streamline operations, the focus on General Convention--which accounts for about 7 or 8 percent of the expenditures in the churchwide budget is kind of puzzling. There's only so much money to be saved there.

Spending on a special convention will not save money. This video is short on specifics and full of jargon. "Missional" is not only an ugly word but it says nothing. She speaks of a "vision of the future" but nobody can see the future, which is always, as Jacques Derrida says, to come. The inside/outside binary she sets up is very simplistic.
And why did she try to have this video distributed to the house of deputies via the bishops? On what authority is she trying to communicate directly to the members of the House of Deputies?
What authority does she have to call for a special general convention?

The PB cannot send message to the whole Church? Just because we cannot see the specifics of the future does not mean it's irrelevant. More than anyone, the PB is the head of our church. She has the right to address all members of the Church. And here ideas about moving beyond the limits is very interesting.
