The saint of 9/11

A good day to remember the late Father Mychal Judge, the Franciscan chaplain of the New York Fire Department who died when the twin towers fell. Judge was gay, a fact that writer Mike Kelly says aroused little concern--or even interest in the Fire Department. The Vatican, however, is not equally enlightened. Can the Church accept a gay saint?

Furthermore, he was a beloved Gay person who ALWAYS helped many people in many desperate circumstances with his powerful message and ministry of carrying "experience, strength and hope" in the name of our Lord Christ.

Why should the sexual orientation of a Roman Catholic priest be a subject of interest? One assumes from the faithfulness Fr. Judge displayed that he was also faithful to his ordination vows as a priest and his vows as a Franciscan, in which case his orientation is a moot point. If not, it is still impossible to deny the devotion and faithfulness on display in his last moments as he prayed amid the chaos. He seems like a saint (no modifier) to me.

If Sainthood is good enough for Cardinal Newman, it should be good enough for Fr. Mychal Judge.

Why should the sexual orientation of a Roman Catholic priest be a subject of interest?

Um, that's a question that should best be addressed to the Vatican, Jody.
