UK cleric: lay off our National Health Service

Like so many other Englishmen, Canon Giles Fraser has heard about enough of the American right's misrepresentations of his country's National Health Service:

If the NHS is so terrible, why do so few people go private in the UK? If the NHS is so terrible, why do we have a higher life-expectancy in this country than in the United States, and, on most measures, can expect roughly similar health out- comes from our different arrangements?

I find the arguments against universal health care in the US to be selfish and often ignorant. I was similarly shocked by the outcry against freeing the Libyan terrorist. There seems to be a streak of iron in the American psyche as witnessed by victims being given time to vent their anger at sentencing after a trial and of course in capital punishment.

I rather wish that Americans would lay off Canadians too re health insurance. While there are exceptions in any situation, most of us are well satisfied with universal coverage at a per capita cost much lower than that of the US
