Morals schmorals
Dan Gilgoff of US News reports on a Pew Survey in which the percentage of respondents who listed "moral values" as their top concern plummeted from 27 percent (and first place) in 2004 to 10 percent (and a tie for third). E. J. Dionne thinks he knows why. Mark Silk has also chimed in.

It's a no-brainer that the economy is number one in the minds of voters. What's not clear is whether moral values remains salient in a choice between candidates espousing the same economic platform. Morals could be just taking a back seat while the economy is in the dumps. Voters aren't that fickle. While moral values concerns have been trending away from conservative they've not taken a sudden swing. Witness the recent poll showing a majority now call themselves pro-LIFE for the first since the question has been asked.
