Open meetings

Last weeks’ meeting of the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church sparked more conversation than such meeting usually do, much of it about Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori’s remarks about church governance and the debate about the manner in which the church should carry its debt.

I have nothing new to say about either of those issues, but would like to point out how glad I am to belong to a Church in which sensitive matters are openly discussed and reported upon. So here is a tip of the hat to Mary Frances Schjonberg of Episcopal News Service for covering the meetings like a reporter rather a reputation manager, to the Executive Council for resisting the temptation to slip beneath the cloak of secrecy known as executive session and to Del Glover for reminding us that vigorous disagreement within our governing bodies is a sign of maturity and health, and not an indication that the apocalypse is nigh.

I agree. It was refreshing. So now let's have a real debate about the Anglican Covenant where we "pew sitters" can see the pros and cons of the arguments in terms that we can understand. I see lots of cons in the TEC media; not many pros. Get Mary Frances on this case!

Norris: You won't find very many Episcopalians in favor of the Anglican Covenant because the term is an oxymoron as far as being an Anglican is concerned. Those two words go together about as well as the term military intelligence does.-Fr. Tom Beasley+ aka frbeesknees
