Breaking: Bad weekend for proposed Anglican Covenant
Four dioceses in the Church of England voted on the proposed Anglican Covenant today. All four voted against it. To date, ten of the church's 44 dioceses have voted against the covenant, which is supported by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, while five have voted in favor of the covenant.
Voting in the negative today were the dioceses of Leicester, Portsmouth, Rochester and Salisbury.
Eighteen of the remaining 29 dioceses will need to vote in favor of the proposed covenant if it is to be returned for a vote at the church's General Syond.
UPDATED: Thinking Anglicans has the vote totals (for the dioceses that have published that information). What's interesting is that it's being defeated uniformly in the clergy order.

Does it seem interesting to anyone else that this news follows so hard on the decision by the General Synod to insist on supporting the ordination of women bishops which was contrary to the wishes of the Archbishops? It's almost as if the dioceses have been given permission to dissent now.

Let's give special thanks to the No Anglican Covenant who pressed to be sure that both sides were heard in the debate and not just the Archbishops'"Oh vote for it to please us," posturing.

Or rather disagree. Dissent as James Allison reminds us is the term for a parent-child relationship in these matters. Acting as siblings these diocese have acted in the way mature siblings can. They disagree. And being freed to do so is a sign of health in a conversation that has increasingly sounded like that of a codependent or addictive household.
