Not KJV? Burn it!

Ever wonder what unites Country Music, works by Mother Teresa, Rick Warren, and the Pope, as well as the NRSV Bible, Good News for Modern Man, the Message Bible and the NIV Bible...?

...well, the pastor and the 14 members of one church in North Carolina believe these works are all works of Satan:

North Carolina church to burn ‘Satan’s books,’ including works of Mother Teresa
From RawStory.com

A Baptist Church near Asheville, N.C., is hosting a "Halloween book burning" to purge the area of "Satan's" works, which include all non-King James versions of the Bible, popular books by many religious authors and even country music.

The website for the Amazing Grace Baptist Church in Canton, N.C., says there are "scriptural bases" for the book burning. The site quotes Acts 19:18-20: "And many that believed, came and confessed and shewed their deeds. Many of them also which used curious arts, brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed."

Church leaders deem Good News for Modern Man, the Evidence Bible, the New International Version Bible, the Green Bible and the Message Bible, as well as at least seven other versions of the Bible as "Satan's Bibles," according to the website. Attendees will also set fire to "Satan's popular books" such as the work of "heretics" including the Pope, Mother Teresa, Billy Graham and Rick Warren.

30 years ago in Greenville, South Carolina, I had earnest Bob Jones University students telling me the KJV was the only version of the bible authorized by God in English. When I asked them what proof they had of that, they turned to the flyleaf/title page of the Bible and showed the page indicating that this was the "authorized version."

I stifled my laughter, explaining that it was the Bible authorized for use in the Church of England by King James, and being neither Anglicans nor Episcopalians they had no business using "my", "our" Bible. They called me spawn of Satan and went off muttering.

Sounds like some ignorant literalisms never die.

Holy Lord! What is scary is that these people vote and drive.

An AP television report pointed out that this church has all of 14 members. Its Bible-burning is a publicity stunt.

This yahoo is a lot less dangerous than the TV preachers and megachurches that teach the same thing. They all ignore that James was in love with the Duke of Buckingham, complete with a secret passage between their bedrooms at Apethorpe Hall.

Perhaps they stone someone later in the year, there's a scriptural basis for that too. And when their fifteen minutes in the spotlight is over maybe we can get back to the Good News.
