Once again we see diocesan search committees with an inordinate number of diocesan execs on their slate. It is something of a trend that if you aspire to the purple then get yourself a diocesan post. The proportion of such candidates is reflected in numerous searches over the past several years.
My concern is that I know many such persons who have had little if any experience as rectors of parishes, and indeed in some [many] cases are/were incapable of doing so. I am not speaking of candidates who have had proven ability in both fields.
I think it is time to break this pattern and select pastors rather than executives.

Just out of curiosity, why does Canon Barlowe get a "Very" before his name? He's not a dean any more, right? I've seen that a few places, and I'm just wondering if we're all copying a mistake somewhere along the way, or if there's a reason for it.

Once a Very, always a Very!
