Dan Martins elected bishop in Springfield

The Rev. Dan Martins was elected the 11th Bishop of the Diocese of Springfield this afternoon on the third ballot. Martins led in all three ballots in the clergy, and was nearly elected on the second ballot when lay supporters of Canon Mark Stevenson appear to have shifted their support to Martins. Martins' election, as are all elections, dependent on the successful completion of the consents process.

See the ballot results here.

Bishop-elect Martins' profile is posted here on the Diocese of Springfield's website.

Soon to be +Dan will be an addition to the HoB. He will be supervised, of course, by the very active Verbosians of the House of Deputies.

Dan+ was a part and we hope still will be part of that group, which was the only group at the 2006 GC to share a communion with people from the entire spectrum of positions in TEC. (Many of the discontent you may remember held their own communion service each day in protest.)

He will, I expect, be a firm voice for his position while staying in TEC. Earlier this week my post on the candidates lumped Dan in with that group opposed to the ordination of women. He is not. We should expect him to be a voice for being "communion minded" with respect to our choices, but if we want to model inclusivity I believe we can trust Dan to remain included.

Oy vey. Prayers for all the diocesan Standing Committees, as they discern their response in the consents process.
