Where the Roman Church is concerned, Rowan's capacity for self-abasement continues to astonish - though kissing the last pope's ring is still a hard act to follow.

The "Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity" brings to mind the names some of the old Soviet "Friendship and Peace" organizations.

I think that you might be confusing humility with humiliation. There's nothing wrong with lowering one's pride in an attempt to realize the Gospel imperative of unity.

I would kiss your ring - heck, I'd even wash your feet.

And, the PCPCU is about the only sign of hope still left at the Vatican! It is good for us to join in their 50th anniversary celebration. John XXIII's legacy must be preserved somehow!

Ecumenical engagement that bypasses engagement with the See of Rome is neither serious nor responsive to the Lord's desire that we may all be one. I do hope Archbishop Rowan will be forthright about the diversity among the member churches of the Anglican Communion. This is one of our gifts to the conversation with Rome. But I can hardly fault him for engaging with the leader of the vast majority of the world's Christians.

Well said, Bishop Chris!

John XXIII's legacy must be preserved somehow!

The "primacy" of the Roman see is the outcome of historical accident and 1800 years of hardball power politics, nothing more & nothing less.
