The single-issue faithful

Andrew Sullivan:

The American Family Association puts out a DVD showing how homosexuals have a plan to infiltrate and take over every small town in America in order to construct a new Sodom to terrorize your children. Or something like that. Is it my imagination or has the far right, salivating over their three anti-gay victories in the last election, decided that fear and loathing of homosexuals is now the fundamental tenet of American conservatism?

My diocese has a number of lesbian and gay clergy and members. If the AFA were really right about the homosexual agenda, all the marriages in the diocese would have collapsed by now. Needless to say, this isn't happening.

The argument that gay marriage will set the stage for polygamy is interesting, given that non-monogamous marriages are allowed for numerous men in the OT.

Jesus had far more to say about wealth than about marriage. In turn, he had far more to say about marriage than about homosexuality. Perhaps the AFA might want to change its focus.

The sad and disturbing thing about all heavily politicized religion in America right now is how its advocates ignore the indispensably essential ethic of Jesus Christ's gospel: "Treat others just as you want to be treated" (Luke 6:31).
