Uganda's highest-ranking police officer advocates for cooler heads

A statement by a Ugandan official relating to the murder of gay activist David Kato cautions against anti-gay violence, including sentiments whipped up by clergy.

Major General Kale Kayihura, Inspector General of Police, advises:

Investigations so far conducted show no indications that the deceased’ campaign against Homosexuality Bill, that is before Parliament was a contributing factor to his death. The police has not received any information pointing to a hate crime apart from speculation from the public. The public is cautioned against intolerance especially exhibited in the media for example in the case of the Rolling Stone newspaper which had the headline “HANG THEM”. I am glad that court quickly took action against this publication. In addition, I request sections of the Clergy campaigning against homosexuality to exercise restraint.

I Hope the respected Major General Kale Kayihura sent a memo to First Lady and MP Janet Museveni:

"You know that you will lose everything else when you lose your soul.¨

"In God's word, homosexuality attracts a curse, but now people are engaging in it and saying they are created that way. It is for money The devil is stoking fires to destroy our nation and those taking advantage are doing so because our people are poor,"
