BREAKING: Uganda's anti-gay bill is now ON AGENDA

In contradiction to our earlier post, the editors of the Episcopal Cafe have now learned that it seems the Uganda anti-gay bill IS ON the agenda for the Parliament session today. Read more about this HERE.

Uganda's anti-gay bill not on agenda after outcry

Uganda's parliament appears to have dropped plans to debate a controversial anti-gay bill after global condemnation.

The anti-gay bill was first proposed in late 2009 but it wasn't debated until last Friday. The bill had been scheduled to be debated again on Wednesday but was dropped from parliament's updated schedule.

While this is good news - we must still hold the LGBT community in Uganda in prayer as the maltreatment still continues. The genital mutilation of gay males, the raping of lesbians, the murder of transgenders - the mentality toward LGBTs has got to change overall in order for true change to come about their somewhat primitive society. I am reminded of the fear on many of the faces of those who participated in the "Voices of Witness:Africa" documentary by Katie Sherrod and Cynthia Black. But still, removing the bill from the agenda is a step in the right direction.

This is good new, but not actually the end of the matter. Their plan was to extract portions of the bill to revise portions of existing laws in order to get around the international condemnation.

So please do not think there is a complete victory in Uganda.

My gay Ugandan friends tell me that the bill is STILL ON THE AGENDA OF PARLIAMENT IN UGANDA. Perhaps the announcement to the contrary was meant to mislead those who have been complaining to the Ugandan president and others in authority.
