In the Name of God, by the authority of baptism, I hereby call upon all Christians to leave the American Family Association. Not just liberal Christians. But all Christians. They teach a false Gospel over there.
Unfortunately Fr. Carroll there are more "Christians" who buy into the clap trap of the AFA than we would like to admit. People like that are the ones whose 'values' have propelled the likes of a George Bush into the White House and want to pass constitutional amendments to institutionalize bigotry in this country. We who support LGBT folks' right to full inclusion in the body of Christ often fail to understand the visceral hatred of homosexuals that is still so pervasive.
Watching the hysterical reaction to a very small step forward in 2003 has driven this point home. But as a heterosexual, there's only so much I can understand. The issue here is not sex; it is violence against persons. Insofar as the Church helps police the gender binary and most churches do so in explicit or implicit ways, we are complicit in spiritual, emotional, and physical violence against persons. This is heresy, and the Episcopal Church, as it has with racism and sexism, has only taken small, token steps toward renouncing this heresy. We are, as Susan Russell said today, one step further out of the closet.
