Bending towards justice

There were several advances yesterday on the same sex marriage front. Most reported of course was the change in the Obama administration’s posture towards the Defense of Marriage Act. See Andrew Sullivan’s analysis.

Hawaii’s governor signed into a law a measure that extends the same rights and benefits to partners in a civil union that spouses in a marriage enjoy.

In a preliminary vote, the Maryland state senate passed a same-sex marriage bill. The final vote in the senate is scheduled for today. The bill then moves to the house. Added. The senate passed the bill.

Opponents of same-sex marriage are not happy.

It is good news for those who support Family Values that Value All Families. And it is great news for those who are part of a growing Protect Marriage Movement committed to Protecting All Marriages… What the White House said today is that it is unconstitutional to defend some marriages and not others.
